PHILADELPHIA - Senior defender Megan Hannahoe's fourth goal of the season ended nearly 95 minutes of scoreless play Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field as the Owls outlasted Saint Louis, 1-0 in double overtime. The Temple offense registered 18 shots and posted a season-high 19 penalty corners in improving its overall record to 13-5 and Atlantic 10 mark to 4-2. With the win, the Cherry and White have secured their 15th appearance in the Atlantic 10 tournament since 1989. With the loss, the Billikens drop below .500 overall at 7-8 and are now 3-3 in conference play.
The afternoon's goalkeeper duel came as advertised as Temple sophomore Erin Hanshue entered the contest ranked first (1.08) in the Atlantic 10 in goals against average while Saint Louis junior Amy Wasserman placed third (1.49) on the list. Hanshue stopped five shots en route to a career-high sixth shutout this season while Wasserman posted 11 saves in the losing effort.
Both teams had their chances throughout the first 35 minutes as Billiken junior forward Catherine Donovan muffed on a penalty stroke and Hannahoe narrowly missed the game's first tally at the 12:30 mark as she sent Wasserman sprawling for one of her three first half saves. Wasserman returned the favor at the 9:48 mark of the first extra session as junior midfielder Alli Lokey's penalty stroke attempt was pushed away by the goalkeeper.
Lokey fired her 10th shot of the afternoon before Wasserman's redirection found Hannahoe for the game's first and final score. The senior, playing in her final home game wearing the Cherry and White, was honored prior to the first whistle and afterwards reflected on her last goal scored at Geasey Field.
"It's exciting to be the one who caps off our home schedule like that," said Hannahoe. "It's just really special to end my career at Temple with a game-winning goal."
The Cherry and White will conclude their regular season following a five-day lay-off at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Saint Joseph's.
