PHILADELPHIA -
Second-year head coach Amanda Janney will lead the Temple field hockey team into the Atlantic 10 tournament this weekend for the program's 15th time since 1989. The Owls will be accompanied by semifinal opponent and tournament host #16 Richmond (Friday, 11:00 a.m.), second-seeded Saint Joseph's and third-seeded Rhode Island (Friday, 2:00 p.m.).
Last season, Amanda Janney and the Cherry and White entered the tournament weekend with the program's first winning record since 1992. This season, the Owls will look to capture their first title since 1994 after winning 13 regular season games, the most since 1991. Offensively, the Owls have been led by junior midfielder Alli Lokey. The 2005 first team all-conference selection leads all Owls in goals (10) and points (24) while tying for the lead in assists (4). On the defensive end, sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue has posted a 1.09 goals against average (GAA), good for seventh nationally, and 6 shutouts while stopping 84 shots and boasting a .784 save percentage, ranking sixteenth nationally.
Staring at the Owls in the semifinal round is 16th-ranked Richmond, a perfect 7-0 in-conference record for the fifth straight season and a current 40-game Atlantic 10 win streak. Junior midfielder Shannon Taylor ranks tied for third nationally in goals with 27 while placing tied for second in points with 62. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Becca Weaver has paced the Spiders in tallying a 1.77 GAA and 77 saves.
In the tournament's second semifinal contest, Saint Joseph's, led by senior midfielder Nicole Antonini's 13 goals and 30 points, will battle Rhode Island and junior goalkeeper M.J. Britt's 1.88 GAA. The title game of the Atlantic 10 Championship is set for Saturday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. Admission to Crenshaw Field for the tournament is free.
