PHILADELPHIA - In their Atlantic 10 Conference opener, the Temple field hockey team won its seventh straight contest following a 2-1 overtime win on Friday afternoon at Massachusetts. Minutewomen freshman midfielder Cher King's goal with just under six minutes remaining in regulation forced the extra session before Owls junior midfielder Alli Lokey converted a penalty corner into the game's winning tally. With the win, the Owls improved 10-3 overall while UMass falls to 3-9.
Following a scoreless first 35 minutes that saw the hosts own a 6-1 shot advantage, Temple freshman forward Charise Young responded just 58 ticks into the second stanza with her fifth goal of the season. The Cherry and White lead held for more than 63 minutes before UMass sophomore midfielder Katelyn Orlando found King for her third goal of the season and game's equalizer.
The Owls ducked dropping their second overtime contest this season when UMass sophomore forward, and leading scorer, Lauren Gillespie fired a penalty corner wide just over four minutes into overtime. Despite failing on their first penalty corner of the overtime just moments before, sophomore midfielder Mary Catherine Kinneman set up Lokey for her fifth tally of the season and the contest's decisive goal.
Defensively, Temple sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue stopped three shots while Minutewomen freshman goalkeeper Sarah Williams made five saves.
With Lokey's goal, the Owls avenge last season's conference overtime loss to the Minutewomen and win seven straight games for the first time since 1991.
Temple continues its four-game road trip Sunday at Rhode Island at noon.
