PHILADELPHIA - Temple head men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy was recognized Wednesday night as a "Local Hero" by Bank of America at its annual Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. Dunphy was joined by the five other Philly 6 coaches that have joined forces to raise money for Coaches vs. Cancer. In all, Bank of America honored six Philadelphia area residents and two non-profit organizations.

Dunphy, a the 2002 National Coach of the Year recipient for spearheading the Philly 6 efforts on behalf of Coaches vs. Cancer, has spearheaded efforts that have raised more than $1 million for the fight against cancer. Each year, through events that range from Golf outings to BasketBall's, the six Philadelphia area coaches have strived to increase awareness and support to help combat cancer.

"We hope to break the million-dollar mark next year," said Dunphy, who saw his group's effort set an all-time high of $780,000 in contributions during the 2005-06 season.

"The support for Coaches vs. Cancer has become extraordinary over the years," he added. "The events that our region puts on in the Philadelphia area alone helps raise the needed funds for the daily battle against this disease. I am proud to be involved in such an outstanding organization."

Coaches vs. Cancer is just one of Temple's new basketball coach's passions. He also champions Big Brothers/Big Sisters, serving on the organization's Greater Philadelphia Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame and the corporate committee of the National Adoption Center's annual Gala.
