Lokey Heads Owls Honored by the A10

PHILADELPHIA - The Atlantic 10 field hockey coaches voted junior midfielder Alli Lokey to the conference's first team while junior defender Ashley Bird, sophomore midfielder Mary Catherine Kinneman and freshman forward Charise Young each received second team accolades, announced the conference Thursday. Junior midfielder Leanne Vogelsong was named to the conference's honorable mention team, freshman forward Mandi Ruth joined Young as an all-rookie honoree and sophomore forward Liz Watto accompanies Bird and Kinneman on the all-academic roster.

Lokey, receiving her second first team honor in as many years, posted a career-high 10 goals, four assists and 24 points in leading the Owls to their first 13-win season since 1991. Following a one-goal and one-assist performance in wins over Drexel and Delaware, respectively, the junior midfielder was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week (9/25). In four of the Owls overtime wins, Lokey tallied the extra session winner on three different occasions versus Lehigh (8/26), Lafayette (9/24) and Massachusetts (10/6).

Bird, Kinneman and Young are each receiving their first career postseason accolades. Bird, often recognized for her solid defensive play, posted five points on one goal and three assists in 19 starts. Kinneman, starting all 19 games, tied for the top spot among the Owls with four assists while recording 10 points, three goals and three defensive saves. Young, after being named the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week for her five points tallied against Rider (9/6), Maryland (9/9) and American (9/10), placed second on the Cherry and White with 14 points on five goals and four assists.

Vogelsong, making 19 starts this season, posted a career-high six points on four assists and one goal. Ruth, starting in 15 contests, was twice named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (9/5, 9/25) before finishing with 14 points, six goals, good for second among the Owls, and two assists. Watto, collecting 17 starts, tallied a career-high eight points on three goals and two assists.

Richmond junior forward Shannon Taylor was honored as the conference's Offensive Player of the Year while teammate Lindsey Conrad received the Rookie of the Year award. Rhode Island head coach Stacey Bean was named the Coach of the Year and goalkeeper M.J. Britt was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year. Lastly, Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer was voted the Atlantic 10's Student-Athlete of the Year.

The fourth-seeded Cherry and White begin the quest for their first Atlantic 10 tournament championship since 1994 on Friday morning against first-seeded #16 Richmond at 11:00 a.m. Second-seeded Saint Joseph's meets third-seeded Rhode Island at 2:00 p.m. Admission to Crenshaw Field, on the campus of the University of Richmond, for the tournament is free.
