PHILADELPHIA -- Senior All-America candidate Mardy Collins has been named the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for the week ending February 25. Collins, who earned his second honor of the season and seventh of his career, shares the A-10 Player of the Week award with Massachusetts junior forward Rashaun Freeman.
The 6-6 point guard averaged 24 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the Owls' two games on the week. The Philadelphia native (Simon Gratz HS) scored a game-high 22 points on eight-of-15 shooting in his team's 69-30 win over Richmond on February 22. He followed that up by scoring a game-high 26 points on 13-of-25 shooting while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds in Temple's 74-66 loss to #1 Duke on February 25.
Collins' 25 field goal attempts in the Duke game were four more than his previous career high. He also scored six of Temple's final 10 points after returning to the lineup after suffering a sprained right foot with just under seven minutes remaining. He also moved past Terence Stansbury (1,811, 1980-84) and into fourth place on the Owls' all-time scoring list. He now has 1,825 points.
