FIELD HOCKEY PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN ATLANTIC 10

PHILADELPHIA (8/21/06) -- As a result of a preseason poll, the Atlantic 10 announced Monday that the Temple field hockey team has been voted to finish second in 2006.  The Owls, returning 11 players from the second-place 2005 team, begin the new campaign Saturday, August 26, when they welcome visiting Lehigh to Geasey Field at 1:00 p.m.

"We're really excited about getting into our Atlantic 10 schedule," said second-year head coach Amanda Janney.  "The team has been playing hard and they look good in our preseason scrimmages.  We have a young roster, but our upper classmen are focused, have the motivated and are looking forward to our conference games."

Janney welcomes 11 incoming freshman to a roster that won 10 of their final 13 regular season games a year ago.  The 2005 Co-Coach of the Year will rely on her two veteran team captains, senior defender Megan Hannahoe and junior midfielder Alli Lokey, to guide this young squad back into Atlantic 10 contention.

Hannahoe, the team's lone senior, started all 21 games last season while scoring eight points on four goals.  Lokey, a first team all-conference performer in 2005, led all Owls in points (22) and assists (6) while tying for the team-lead in goals (8).  In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue will look to build upon her all-rookie and honorable mention 2005 season.  Hanshue finished second among Atlantic 10 goalkeepers in 2005 with five shutouts while posting a 1.77 GAA.

In the preseason poll, the Owls rank second behind 2005 Atlantic 10 champions Richmond and one spot ahead of last season's conference tournament runner-up, Massachusetts.

"The ranking is generous since we lost so many seniors, but we think we will live up to the standard we set last season," said Janney.

Temple begins their Atlantic 10 slate with four consecutive games away from home starting Friday, October 6th at Massachusetts.  The Owls go without host a conference game until Friday, October 20th when visiting Richmond comes to Geasey Field.
