FIELD HOCKEY TOPS LEHIGH IN OVERTIME THRILLER, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple field hockey team began their 2006 season in winning fashion following a 2-1 overtime victory over Lehigh at Geasey Field on Saturday afternoon.  Senior co-captain Megan Hannahoe's late second half goal forced the tie in regulation before junior co-captain Alli Lokey deposited the extra-session winner.

The visiting Mountain Hawks broke the game's scoring silence just over 22 minutes into the first half when junior Christy Smith found herself alone in front of Owls' goalkeeper Erin Hanshue.  Smith beat Hanshue's stick-side for the 1-0 advantage.  Despite four penalty corners from the Owls and a 5-4 shooting advantage, Lehigh carried their lead into the intermission.

The Owls resumed play in the second half with an aggressive offensive attack that forced eight penalty corners.  The hosts had several chances to get on the board, but Lehigh senior goalkeeper Stephanie Palmieri's stingy play in the cage kept the Owls at bay.  Both Hannahoe and Lokey fired healthy shots off Palmieri's pads while sophomore Mary Catherine Kinneman missed wide with just over seven minutes remaining.  Off the Owls' 11th penalty corner of the afternoon with less than three minutes remaining, Lokey found an open Hannahoe for the game's tying goal.

With the seven-on-seven 15 minute overtime session came a hint of controversy that led the Mountain Hawks to believe they had secured the win.  Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Cochran's feed and sophomore forward Kara Zweizig's goal seemed to be the game-winner before an official's conference reversed the call.  Minutes later, Owls freshman forward Charise Young tipped the ball passed the Mountain Hawk defense onto Lokey's stick for the decisive tally.

Following the game, second year head coach Amanda Janney praised her team's persistent effort.

"We got a tremendous team effort this afternoon.  For us to get many contributions from all areas of the field, we couldn't be more excited," said the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Coach of the Year.

Despite facing just two shots, Hanshue picked up the win while posting one save.  Palmieri made eight saves in the losing effort.

The Owls return to the Geasy Field on Saturday (9/2) for the annual Temple Invitational at 12:00 p.m. against Rutgers.
