Owls Offense Explodes in 6-1 Win Over Monmouth

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team fired 30 shots en route to a 6-1 win over Monmouth Saturday afternoon at Geasey Field. Second-year head coach Amanda Janney benefited from an aggressive offense that featured six different goal scorers and eight penalty corners. With the victory, the Cherry and White snap a two-game skid and improve to 4-3 overall while the Hawks fall to 2-5.

The Owls' offense wasted just one minute and 13 seconds before junior midfielder Alli Lokey connected with senior defender Megan Hannahoe off a penalty corner for the game's first tally. Twelve minutes later, sophomore midfielder Mary Catherine Kinneman's cross would result in freshman forward Mandi Ruth's third goal of the season at the 13:33 mark. Freshman forward Charise Young would add the Owls' third and final goal of the first half at the 15:07 mark after freshman forward Dannah Brehm's assist in front.

Monmouth junior forward Hollee Hooven's fourth goal of the season cut the Owls' advantage to two before the final 32 minutes would see Kinneman, sophomore forward Liz Watto and freshman forward Kasey Ruth register the first goals of their Temple careers. Junior midfielder Ashley Bird's long pass set up Watto at the 45:37 mark while Brehm found Ruth in front with under 14 minutes remaining. Kinneman's goal, Temple's last of the afternoon, went unassisted with just under three and a half minutes remaining and would cap the program's first six-goal game since 2003 against West Chester (10/19/03).

Owls' sophomore goalkeeper and reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Erin Hanshue stopped just two saves in the win. Monmouth goalkeeper Chelsea Farley stopped 13 shots before making way to freshman goalkeeper Megan Smith and her seven saves.

Following the contest, Janney praised her squad's balance and youthful offensive attack.

"We are very impressed with our overall team effort today," said Janney. "To have six different scorers is just a great sign for our future. With so many scoring threats, it's hard not to be excited about this team's potential and bright future."

The Cherry and White return to action tomorrow afternoon at Geasey Field against Fairfield. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
