PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team won their second consecutive game following a 3-0 blanking of Fairfield Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. Temple's offense registered 10 shots while Fairfield could only muster one in the direction of sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue. With the win, the Owls improve to 5-3 overall while the Stags fall to 2-6.
Junior midfielder Leanne Vogelsong broke the game's scoreless silence at the 13:57 mark of the first half after she found herself alone just inside the circle. Vogelsong penetrated the Stag defense and rifled her first goal of the season giving the Owls a 1-0 advantage. The Owls would push their lead to two goals slightly more than nine minutes later when junior midfielder Alli Lokey set up freshman forward Mandi Ruth for her fourth goal of the season. The hosts held a seven shot advantage and a two goal lead heading into intermission.
The Owls closed out the game's scoring with more than 20 minutes remaining when sophomore forward Liz Watto's cross found an open freshman forward Mandi Ruth, who settled the pass and beat Fairfield goalkeeper Elizabeth Thomas.
Following the win, second-year head coach Amanda Janney credited her defense for their solid performance.
"Our midfielders and backfield executed the defensive press that we'd been working on," said Janney. "It's a great sign to see the team defense improve each game as we continue to teach new schemes."
With the second win in just as many days, Vogelsong noted a different Temple team than she's accustomed to seeing on a Sunday afternoon.
"We played a lot more composed than we have in the past on a Sunday," said Vogelsong. "We tend to come out the day after a game a little tired, but there were no signs of that today."
Hanshue, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, went without recording a save in posting her second shutout of the season. Thomas stopped two shots for the Stags in the losing effort.
The Cherry and White wrap up a three-game homestand Wednesday against Drexel at 4:30 p.m.
