Owls Keep Rolling in 1-0 Shutout of Drexel
9.20.06 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team dealt their second shutout in as many games following a 1-0 statement win over cross-city rival Drexel on Wednesday at Geasey Field. Temple sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue needed four saves for her third blanking this season while the contest's lone tally came courtesy of junior midfielder Alli Lokey. With their third straight win, the Owls improve to 6-3 overall while Drexel dropped just their second game this season and falls to 6-2.
After settling a long rebound, Lokey fired her third goal of the season past Dragon goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew just five and a half minutes into play. Despite losing the penalty corner battle, 4-3, and only out-shooting the visitors by one, 10-9, Lokey's goal would be all the Owls needed behind a strong defensive effort. While the Dragons entered the match leading the country in penalty corners per game (9.6), second-year Temple head coach Amanda Janney didn't hesitate to acknowledge the defense's critical play.
"The defense was really excited knowing what Drexel had done in the circle so far this season," said the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Coach of the Year. "Erin [Hanshue] made two big saves, Nadia [Clendening] was great today - it was just a total team effort on the defensive end."
With the Owls first win over the Dragons since 1990, Hanshue has not allowed an opponent to score in slightly less than 172 consecutive minutes.
The Owls will play six of their next seven, and seven of their next 10 games, on the road starting Friday at Delaware at 7:00 p.m.
