PHILADELPHIA- Sophomore Kasey Ruth scored two goals to clinch Temple's second Atlantic 10 win over Massachusetts, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The Owls are 11-5 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutewomen fall to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

In a scoreless first half, the Owls led UMass in shots (3-2) but the Minutewomen held the advantage in penalty corners (2-1). Senior Mary Catherine Kinneman stopped UMass from converting one of the penalty corners with a defensive save.

Both teams entered the second half ready to score, but Ruth stepped up for Temple tallying the first goal of the game. Just two minutes and 11 seconds into the half the Owls broke down field for a fast break. Ruth dribbled into the UMass circle and dodged the Minutewomens goalie for an open shot at the cage.

Less than 10 minutes later UMass responded to the lone Temple goal. Sophomore Cher King sent a shot toward cage off a penalty corner. Freshman Katie Kelly was able to get a stick on Kings shot and tipped the ball into the cage. Play continued for more than 20 minutes before Ruth scored the game winner. Senior Ashley Bird hit a shot to cage off a penalty corner attempt, but it was stopped by UMass goalie Becky Letourneau. Ruth collected the save off Letourneau's pads and lifted the ball over the goalie and into the cage.

Junior Erin Hanshue made five saves on day and the Owls lead the Minutewomen in shots (9-8). Each team had seven penalty corner attempts.

The Cherry and White will take on Rhode Island for the second match of a three-game homestand on Sunday, October 14 at 12:00 p.m.
