PHILADELPHIA- Sophomore forward Dannah Brehm netted three goals, including two in the first minute of the second half, to lead the Temple field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Saint Joseph's and the 2007 Atlantic 10 regular season title. This is Temple's (15-5) first-ever regular season A-10 title, thanks to a 6-1 Conference record. As the #1 seed, the Cherry and White will have a rematch with the fourth-seeded Hawks (10-8, 4-3 A-10) in the A-10 Tournament semifinals next week.
In a rain-soaked first stanza, Saint Joseph's took an early lead midway through the first half. On a scramble in front of the cage, Jen Wrublesky tallied her ninth goal of the year to put SJU on top, 1-0. The lead would be short-lived, as Mandi Ruth found Brehm for her first goal of the game less than five minutes later to equalize. The teams would remain tied heading into halftime.
Temple came out firing in the early part of the second half, scoring two goals in a span of 40 seconds to take the wind out of SJU's sails. Just 20 seconds into the period, Brehm took a pass in front of the goal from All-American candidate Alli Lokey and shot it into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer to give the Owls the lead. 40 seconds later, Brehm and Lokey hooked up again to pad Temple's cushion. The goal was Brehm's third of the game and her ninth of the season. Lokey scored a goal of her own, her 18th of the year, with 9:14 remaining in the game. The Hawks fought to close the gap in the waining minutes of the game and netted their second goal with just three minutes remaining but it was too little too late, as Temple walked away with the 4-2 victory.
TU goalie Erin Hanshue had three saves in goal, while Cunfer had two. Brehm added one assist to her all-star performance.
Temple and Saint Joseph's will face off again on Friday, November 2 at 11:00 a.m. on SJU's Finnesey Field. Massachusetts and Richmond will play at 2:00 p.m. in the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinals will meet at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3 to decide the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship.
