MALVERN, PA - Temple University head men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy was the recipient of the Malvern Prep Fathers' Club 2007 Leadership Award at the Preparatory School's 61st Annual Father/Son Banquet held March 27. Dunphy, who just completed his first season at the helm of the Owls' program, is a graduate of Malvern Prep's Class of 1966.
The award is given each year for "commitment to Christian values, for involvement in the community and for leadership in all areas of life." Past award winners include Pro Bowl kicker David Akers, Saint Joseph's head men's basketball coach Phil Martelli and Philadelphia 76ers president Billy King.
Prior to his arrival at Temple, Dunphy guided the Penn Quakers to remarkable levels of achievement during his 17-year tenure at the Ivy League school. His Quaker teams posted a school-record 310 wins and 10 Ivy League championships. In addition, he guided Penn to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, nine 20-win seasons, three Philadelphia Big 5 City Series titles, seven Ivy League Players of the Year, three Ivy League Rookies of the Year, five perfect Ivy League seasons and 41 All-Ivy League honorees. Upon taking the Temple job, Dunphy became the first person to serve as the head men's basketball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions.
Dunphy has also been dedicated to service to others throughout his career. He is one of the leaders in the local Coaches vs. Cancer campaign and was named to the National Council of Coaches vs. Cancer. He was also honored as the 2002 National Coaches vs. Cancer Coach of the Year for his service and tireless dedication to those in need. Dunphy also devotes time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia's Board of Directors, and his Penn teams have participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program each year. He is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame and the corporate committee of the National Adoption Center's annual Gala.
In addition to the Leadership Award Certificate and a framed print of Malvern's Our Mother of Good Counsel Chapel, the Fathers' Club also presented Dunphy with a donation to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia.
