Riley Named Assistant Field Hockey Coach

PHILADELPHIA - Beth Riley, a four-year letterwinner at Michigan (2003-06), has been named an assistant field hockey coach at Temple University, third-year head coach Amanda Janney announced today. Riley will serve as the primary goalkeeper coach while also coordinating recruiting, travel and fundraising.
"Beth will add a strong level of experience to our goalkeepers due to her playing career in the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament," commented Janney. "I am thrilled to name Beth an assistant coach after coming from Michigan and with her local ties in the state of Pennsylvania."
Riley arrives on North Broad Street after capturing two Big Ten Tournament crowns (2004-05) and appearing in three NCAA Tournaments (2003-05) with the Wolverines. The Palmyra, Pa. native leaves Ann Arbor the all-time leader as a goalkeeper in games played (79) and wins (57) while ranking in the top five in career saves (358), career shutouts (16) and career goals against average (1.34).
Following her senior season, Riley was named Second Team All-Big Ten and Second Team NFHCA All-Region. The three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honoree was named to the Conference's All-Tournament Team in 2005. In three appearances in the NCAA Tournament with Riley in the cage, the Wolverines captured four wins and made a trip to the semifinals in 2003.
Academically, Riley graduated with a Bachelor's of Art degree in Sport Management and a 3.37 GPA in April 2007. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2004-06) and four-time Michigan Scholar-Athlete award-winner (2003-06), was twice recognized on the national stage with NFHCA All-Academic recognition (2003, '06). Additionally, Riley served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative.
"I'm very excited to transition from player to coach and am extremely pleased with the opportunity to work with Coach Janney in the upcoming season," said Riley. "I look forward to working with this talented group of athletes as I hope to bring a new perspective for both goalkeeping and defensive strategies."
Riley joins Janney on the sidelines after three separate coaching stints with University of Michigan instructional camps (2004-2007), the United States Field Hockey Association (2005-07) and Shippensburg University instructional camps (2006-07). As a goalkeeper coach with the USFHA Futures Program and at several camps, Riley worked with former and current college players and coaches in introducing and developing skills with prospective college players.
Janney, Riley and the Owls begin the 2007 campaign at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25 on the road at Lehigh.
