PHILADELPHIA- Jamie Whitten, a former standout defender for Wake Forest, will join Amanda Janney and Beth Riley as a graduate assistant coach for field hockey. Whitten will serve in coordinating recruiting, fundraising, and travel.
"We are so happy to have Jamie join our coaching staff," said head coach Amanda Janney. "She is a tremendously talented defender with a wealth of knowledge from her experience in the backfield for Wake Forest. She was extremely successful as a player and I believe that she will transition well into coaching at the Division 1 level. Her enthusiasm and positive attitude will make her a great teacher of the game and her focus on teamwork and hustle will mesh well with our team's philosophy. I am excited to have her begin working with our Defenders as her technical details and advice will make our team defense even stronger. She will be a great role model for our current student-athletes as she continues to pursue her Masters Degree while balancing the time commitments of our hockey program."
Whitten started in every game of her four year career with Wake Forest. Whitten was named to the All-ACC American team, All-ACC team, NCAA All-Tournament team, and was Second Team All-American in 2006. While at Wake Forest, the team captured two National Championships (2004 and 2005), as well as two ACC Championships (2004 and 2006). Whitten was a core member of the Wake Forest defense, which in 2005 allowed only 0.96 goals per game.
Whitten's playing experience extends far beyond the U.S. in being part of numerous international teams and tournaments. From 2004 to 2006 Whitten was a member of the United States Women's Field Hockey Junior National Team. She competed in the 2005 Junior Pan American Games held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the fall of 2004 Whitten was a member of the Four Nations Tournament Team that played in Santiago, Chile. In 2005, Whitten returned to Chile to compete with the Junior World Cup Team. Additionally, Whitten has participated in the U.S. Field Hockey Association A-Camp (2000-present).
"Coach Janney and Coach Riley are very knowledgeable and clearly excited to take this team as far as they can go," said Whitten. "The girls are so great. They are incredibly positive and willing to learn. So far I am having a great time being part of this program."
Whitten graduated from Wake Forest in May 2007 with a degree in English and Sociology and a 3.336 GPA. She was a member of the Dean's List from spring of 2004 until the spring of 2006. Whitten was also a member of the ACC Honor Roll for 2004 until 2006.
She is pursuing a master's degree in Urban Education from Temple.
Janney, Riley, Whitten and the rest of the Owls begin the 2007 campaign at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25 on the road at Lehigh.
