PHILADELPHIA- It may have taken two days, but the Temple Field Hockey team opened its 2007 campaign with a 3-1 win at Lehigh Sunday afternoon. After lightning halted play Saturday with the score tied 1-1, the Owls scored the only goals on the second day.
Striking first in yesterday's game start, Liz Watto found the back of the cage in the third minute off a penalty corner from Alli Lokey. The Owls were in the lead until Lehigh's Claire Horn was given a feed from Kelly Fox in the 20th minute to tie the game. In a turn of events, with 13:04 to play in the opening half lightning was spotted in the sky. After a 90-minute delay, it was determined that it was best to resume the game on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. At the time of delay the Owls held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
When the clock restarted Sunday, the Owls took flight to their first win. Sophomore Dannah Brehm connected with fellow sophomore Mandi Ruth, who scored to put the Owls up on the Mountain Hawks 2-1 at 42:44 into the game. Brehm stepped up to find the back of the cage at 51:19 for an unassisted goal. The Cherry and White out shot the Mountain Hawks by an impressive 25-4 and had a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Owls next travel to Maryland on August 30, 2007 to take on the University of Michigan at 7:00 p.m.
