PHILADELPHIA- The annual Temple University Field Hockey Invitational will be held this Labor Day weekend on September 1 and September 2. Geasey Field will once again be host to the astounding two-day field hockey competition. The teams will consist of the University of Pennsylvania, Lock Haven University, Kent State University and the Temple University Owls.

"The Temple Invitational Tournament has been a great tradition of our program," said head coach Amanda Janney. "We are pleased that we have four strong teams again this year. It's great that there are four conferences represented (Ivy, A10, MAC, and NEC) and we hope that this variety in teams will draw a large crowd on both days!"

Penn will play their season opener at the tournament on Saturday with 12-year seasoned head coach Val Cloud. Last season the Quakers ended their season with a 9-8 overall record and finished tied for second in the Ivy League. Penn comes to Temple in hopes of improving their record from last year by starting off the season with strong competition and play.

Lock Haven (1-1) started off their season with a 4-2 loss to William and Mary, but battled back the next game for a 5-0 win against Longwood. The Lock Haven Eagles are coming off a strong win and are looking to stay on that path. Senior Blair Wynne, scoring two of the five goals against Longwood, was named Northeast Conference player of the week for her efforts in the Eagles past two games. Newcomer, Amy Hordendorf, is also making an impact for Lock Haven being named Northeast Conference rookie of the week.

Kent State (0-2) started off their 2007 campaign at the Buckeye Invitational in Ohio last weekend. In two hard fought games, one ending in overtime, the Kent State Flashes went home with no victories. The Flashes Junior, Natalie Barrett, has made a goal scoring impact in both games. Last season, Barrett was named to the MAC All-Tournament team. Kent State comes to North Broad Street looking to even out their record with two wins.

With a winning start of season, the Temple Owls (1-0) began their season with a well fought win against Lehigh. Sophomore, Dannah Brehm, tallied one goal and one assist in the Owls first season effort. Mandi Ruth, sophomore, scored the first game winning goal this season for the Cherry and White at Lehigh. The Owls were voted to finish first in the Atlantic 10 coaches poll for this fall season. The team is looking to continue on their present trail by picking up a pair of wins this weekend.

"There is a lot of excitement around this tournament and I believe that our team will be ready to compete with these non-conference opponents," Janney said. "Penn and Lock Haven will be good challenges for us. Our team had a strong first game and I was happy to see a balance of scoring between four different players. Our team defense is meshing well and our team is again led by strong senior leadership in our backfield."

On Saturday Head-to-Toe Field Hockey will be hosting a clinic on Geasey Field following the 1:00 p.m. game.

"Head to Toe Field Hockey is also running a clinic that features Mandy Latz, an amazing camp coach whose enthusiasm and great coaching should attract some great local high school players to watch our games and to attend her clinic," said Janney.

The tournament will be a two-day event. Tickets costs are $2 for a 1 day pass or $3 for a 2 day pass. Temple students are free with their TU ID.
