Field Hockey Knocks Off Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA-The Temple field hockey team scored three times in the second half to defeat Virginia Commonwealth 3-1 at Temple's Geasey Field on Sunday, September 16. The win raises the Owls' record to 5-3 and drops VCU's record to 3-3 overall.
"This was an awesome win to have after our loss against Penn State," said senior Alli Lokey. "Today was a big game for us. We came out and played our game of hockey."
Lokey initiated the scoring just over five minutes into the second half off a penalty corner. Charise Young started the penalty corner with a pass to Leanne Vogelsong who stopped the ball for Lokey's shot. Both Vogelsong and Young were credited with assists. Just two minutes later sophomore Dannah Brehm broke down field with the ball for a one-on-one with VCU goal keeper Laura Baker. Coming out of the cage to challenge, Baker tried to make the save but Brehm tucked away the ball into the cage.
At the 53 minute mark, Lokey scored her second goal of the day, her season's fifth, giving the Owls a three goal cushion. The goal was scored off a breakaway hit from Brehm. Lokey dribbled the ball into the circle and took a diving shot that raced past VCU's goal keeper and into the cage.
The Rams responded with three minutes left in the contest with a goal from sophomore Rebecca Sullivan, but it was not enough to beat the Owls.
Temple out shot the Virginia Commonwealth, 14-6, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 7-2. Temple goal keeper Erin Hanshue tallied three saves on the day, taking her to thirty on the season.
The Cherry and White will compete against Drexel on the road Wednesday, September 19 at 4 p.m.
