PHILADELPHIA- Senior Leanne Vogelsong tallied the game-winner in the Owls' 2-1 overtime victory against Vermont Friday afternoon. Vogelsong's goal, her first of the season, boosted the Owls to a 7-3 record. Vermont drops to 6-4 on the season. Today marks the first time these two teams have played one another.
"I am really happy with the way this season is going so far," said Vogelsong after the win. "The last two games have been a little difficult cause they went into overtime, but I think overall if we keep playing like we are this could be one of our best seasons."
The Owls defense was put to the test in the first half by Vermont taking eight shots. The Catamounts were able to convert one of the seven penalty corners they acquired in the first half. With a stop from senior Kate Lipton, junior Kim Striegler was able to shoot the ball toward goal. A tip from sophomore Megan Maynard allowed the ball to find the back of the cage leaving Temple trailing, 1-0, at the half.
The start of the second half showed a different Temple team. At the 45 minute mark, Senior Alli Lokey took a shot from the top of the circle, but sophomore Mandi Ruth redirected Lokey's shot for a goal to tie the game. Both teams had scoring opportunities with the clock winding down in regulation, but neither could find the cage causing the game to enter overtime play.
In the back and forth match, Temple was awarded a penalty corner at the nine minute mark in overtime. Sophomore Charise Young sent the ball to the top of the circle where Vogelsong was there for the stop. Lokey, faking a shot, passed the ball back to Vogelsong for the game-winner. Lokey was credited with two assists on the day.
Temple held the advantage in shots 19-16, but the Catamounts out weighted the Owls in penalty corners, 13-8. Junior goal keeper Erin Hanshue recorded her highest count in saves this season with 12.
The Owls return to play tomorrow on Geasey Field against Lafayette at 2:00 p.m.
