COLLEGE PARK, MD- The 2nd ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated the Temple Owls, 3-1, to break the Cherry and White's five game winning streak. The Terrapin victory is the team's 12th straight win this season. The Owls move to a 9-4 record. Temple goalie Erin Hanshue turned in tremendous performance with a career high 18 saves on the day.
The game remained scoreless until 21 minutes into the first half when Maryland sophomore Alexis Pappas collected a rebound of the pads of Hanshue and found the back of the cage. Just eight minutes later the Terrapins would strike again, this time off a penalty corner. Maryland junior Susie Rowe found the cage off a pass from sophomore Ameliet Rischen to make the score 2-0 in favor of Maryland.
Temple next found the cage off a two-on-one situation. Senior Alli Lokey sent a pass to sophomore Kasey Ruth for the Owls only goal of the game and her second of the season. The game went into half time with Maryland holding a 2-1 lead.
The Owls managed to hold off the Terrapins from scoring in the second half, but with six minutes remaining in the game Maryland found the cage one last time. Sophomore Bri Davis hit a cross from the Temple's baseline to the stick of fellow sophomore Nicole Muracco who placed the ball in the cage.
The Terrapins out shot the Owls, 39-9, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 17-4, but the Owls overtook Maryland in saves, 18-0.
Temple will return home for it's first conference game against Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on October 5 at 3:00 p.m.
