PHILADELPHIA- In this week's Division I National Coaches Poll, Temple field hockey received the highest amount of ranking votes since head coach Amanda Janney took over three years ago.
Before its season started Temple was picked to finish first in the Atlantic 10 in a vote by the A-10 coaches. The Owls have started their season determined to make that true. In the season opener at Lehigh the Owls soared a 3-1 win. Behind goals by Junior Liz Watto, sophomore Dannah Brehm, and sophomore Mandi Ruth. Temple then found themselves in a tight game against 15th-ranked University of Michigan. Senior Ashley Bird struck first in the game, which ended with Michigan winning 2-1 in the last minutes of the game.
The Cherry and White are coming off back-to-back wins in this past weekend's Temple Invitational. In their first game against Penn, the Owl toppled the Quakers 4-2. Ruth tallied two goals and Kasey Ruth and Jamie Adams chipped in with one a piece to aid in the victory. To end the tournament, Temple took Lock Haven to overtime, where a game-ending goal by Senior Ashley Bird gave the Owls a 3-2 victory.
The Owls (3-2) will be on the road this weekend playing Albany on September 7 and 20th-ranked Syracuse on September 9. Albany is also receiving votes in this week's coach's poll.
