PHILADELPHIA - Junior Charise Young added her team-leading eight goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Temple Field Hockey team suffered its first conference defeat of the season, falling 3-2 at Richmond on Sunday afternoon.

The loss snaps the Owls (7-9, 3-1) season-high three game winning streak. The loss is also just the latest heartbreak for the Cherry and White against the conference rival Spiders. The Owls drop to 0-14 all-time against Richmond.

Richmond’s Sarah Blythe-Wood got the scoring going for the Spiders (6-9, 2-1) in the 13th minute when she scored off a penalty corner to make the score 1-0. The Owls would tie the game up just nine minutes later when sophomore Stephanie McGinty scored her third goal of the season on a redirected shot to knot the score at 1-1.

McGinty’s goal was assisted by Young, her fourth assist in the past two games. With game tied 1-1, the Spiders would take the lead for good just five minutes after McGinty’s goal, when Katelin Richardson scored her sixth goal of the season to give Richmond a 2-1 lead at the 27th minute.

The score would remain 2-1 through halftime until Richmond added to its lead when Megan Thompson scored in the 59th minute, giving the Spiders a commanding 3-1 lead.

Young scored her eight goal of the season on a penalty stroke in 67th minute, bringing the score to the 3-2 final.

In goal for the Cherry and White, senior Erin Hanshue recorded seven saves.

The Cherry and White will to rebound against city-rival Penn in non-conference action this Wednesday. Play is scheduled to begin at 7:15.
