Volleyball Posts Second Straight Shutout With 3-0 Win Over VCU

PHILADELPHIA-Junior Yun Yi Zhang had 19 kills, while senior Patricia Vernon contributed 10 kills to lead the Temple volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-23, 26-24) over Virginia Commonwealth in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday afternoon. Temple improves to 13-10 overall, while VCU drops to 12-8.
Ariel Pierre had a match-high 17 digs, while Caitlin Loudon chipped in with 11. Setter Jackie Morrison dished 36 assists on the day.
The Rams actually had a higher hitting percentage in sets one and two but an offensive struggle in set three, allowed the Owls to win out in the end with a .184 clip.
Temple got off to a slow start in set one but had a strong second half push to take the set, 25-22. Set two was close throughout, with the teams going point for point. With the set tied at 23, Vernon had two big kills to give the Owls the 25-23 victory. The Cherry and White dominated early in the final set, taking a 13-5 lead. VCU fought back to tie the game at 23 but Temple was too strong down the stretch and took the set, 26-24.
Temple returns to action on October 30 with a home match against La Salle at 7 p.m.
