AMHERST, MA (9/28/08) Despite a career day from goalkeeper senior Erin Hanshue, the Temple Field Hockey team lost an overtime heartbreaker on the road to #17 Umass 2-1 on penalty shots.
Hanshue was brilliant for the Cherry and White (7-11, 3-2) all day long, recording a career-high 18 saves against the talented Minutewomen. She was able to keep the Owls in the game for 100 minutes despite being out-shot 26-13.
After two overtime periods, the game remained knotted at 1-1 and would be decided on penalty shots. UMass's Katelyn Orlando scored first for the Minutewomen (13-3, 5-0), only to matched by the junior Kim Hanshue. But that would be the lone penalty shot for Owls, as UMass would add penalty goals by Erin Parker and Mary Shea en route to the 3-1 penalty shot advantage and 2-1 overtime win.
The game was sent to overtime thanks to late-game heroics of junior Kristin Wanner. She scored her third goal of the season in 64th minute to tie the game 1-1 and send it to overtime
Minutewomen opened up the scoring when Katelyn Orlando scored in the 26th minute, giving UMass and early 1-0 lead.
With the victory, the Minutewomen clinched the Atlantic 10 regular season title and will be the #1 seed for the Atlantic 10 tournament to be held at Geasey Field on November 7-8.
Even with the loss, the third-place Owls have clinched a birth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Owls will battle cross-town rival Saint Joseph's for the third seed in the tournament on Saturday, November 1st from Geasey Field. Play is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The game will also mark Senior Day for Jamie Adams, Erin Hanshue, Mary Catherine Kinneman and Liz Watto.
