PHILADELPHIA - The four Temple seniors playing their final game at Geasey Field walked away victorious, topping city-rival Saint Joseph’s 2-1 in a critical Atlantic 10 conference game.
With the win, the Owls secured the #3 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championships from Geasey Field, and will play Richmond at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. The Hawks fall to the #4 seed and will face regular season champion #17 UMass at 2:30 on Friday.
It was fitting that on Senior Day, that it was senior Liz Watto that would net the first goal of the game for the Cherry and White. She scored in the 22nd minute following a deflected pass from a penalty corner to give the Owls the early 1-0 lead. Junior Kristin Wanner was credited with the assist on the play.
The Cherry and White would head to the lockers rooms up 1-0, scoring on their only shot of the half.
In the second half, it was another senior that may have saved the day for the Owls. Goalie Erin Hanshue made a terrific save on Saint Joseph’s Jen Wwrublesky’s 2-on-1 breakaway shot in the 55th minute to preserve the Owls’ 1-0 lead. Hanshue finished with two saves on the day.
In the 64th minute, junior Mandi Ruth added to the Owls’ lead with her sixth goal of the season, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.
Ruth’s goal would prove quite valuable as just tWO minutes later in the 66th minute, SJU’s Hannah Rogers slipped a goal past Hanshue to bring the score to 2-1. But it was not enough for the Hawks, as the Cherry and White held on the ball in the final three minutes to preserve the win.
The Owls now lead the all-time series with the Hawks 20-9. The third-seeded Cherry and White will face Richmond in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championships on Friday at 11:00 a.m. from Geasey Field.
