PHILADELPHIA (11/6/08) - Senior Mary Catherine Kinneman and junior Charise Young received two of the highest honors in the Atlantic 10 for the 2008 field hockey season, with Kinneman taking home Defensive Player Of The Year honors and Young being named Student-Athlete of the Year. This marks the second consecutive season that an Owl has been named Defensive Player of the Year after Ashley Bird earned the award last season. Young is the first Owl to ever be named Student-Athlete of the Year by the Atlantic 10.
Kinneman and Young were both named to the A-10's First Team, while freshmen Kaylee Keener and Carissa Young were selected to the All-Rookie Team. Senior Liz Watto was recognized for her work in the classroom, joining Young as a member A-10 All-Academic team. Seniors Jamie Adams and Watto were also named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Kinneman started every game for the Owls as the second-year team captain and notched a career-high five assists, which is tied for sixth in the A-10 . She played on both attack and defensive corners as the corner hitter and right trail. In addition, the senior back from Lansdale, Pa., anchors a defensive unit that has blanked three opponents this season.
Young earns the A-10 Field Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award after leading the Owls in goals (eight) points (23). Her .333 shot percentage also leads the team, while her seven assists are tied for tops in the A-10. Young was named to the NFHCA National Academic Team, as well as the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2006 and 2007. A secondary education major, Young was also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team in 2007.
The Owls will be in action in the Atlantic 10 tournament held at Geasey Field against Richmond tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
