PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team's season ended in heartbreaking fashion as Richmond's Sarah Blythe-Wood scored the game-winning goal 50 seconds into overtime, as the Owls fell 4-3 (OT) in the first game of the Atlantic 10 semifinals from Geasey Field.
The game reached overtime after some late-game heroics from the Owls. Junior Dannah Brehm scored her second goal on the afternoon with 2:32 to play. Just 56 seconds later, junior Mandi Ruth scored on a penalty corner, with senior Mary Catherine Kinneman and sister Kasey Ruth assisting, to tie the game 3-3. But the Cherry and White's momentum would be short-lived with the Spiders' quick goal in overtime.
Richmond junior Megan Thompson opened up the scoring for the Spiders after she took a pass from senior teammate Alex Malatesta and fired a glancing shot off the keeper which found the top corner of the goal at the 22:50 mark. Sophomore Dani Pycroft added to the lead at 18:52 after sending a spinning backhand to the left side of the net putting Richmond on top, 2-0.
The Spiders' momentum continued into the second half, with both teams trading possessions until Brehm cut the lead in half with her first goal of the game at the 22:31 mark, 2-1. Richmond quickly responded after Blythe-Wood maneuvered along the right side and connected with Thompson for her second tally of the day, giving Richmond a 3-1 lead.
Richmond, seeking its sixth A-10 title, outshot the Owls 12-4, with both teams even at four penalty corners apiece.
The Spiders will now face #17 UMass in the Atlantic 10 Championship from Geasey Field tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. In the second semifinal, the Minutewomen topped Saint Joseph's 3-0.
The Owls conclude the season with an 8-12 record.
