PHILADELPHIA - Junior Charise Young netted her first career hat trick and junior Mandi Ruth added two goals as the Temple field hockey team overwhelmed Lehigh for a 5-0 season opening victory from Geasey Field on Saturday afternoon.

"The offense completely exceeded our expectations for the first game of the season," said head coach Amanda Janney. "The team played well in all phases of the game and it's great to see all of our hard work in the preseason pay off."

If there were any questions about how the Owls would replace the offense provided by A-10 Offensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-American Alli Lokey, they were answered in the first 10 minutes against the Mountain Hawks. In the 3rd minute, junior Mandi Ruth connected for the season's first goal with a beautiful set-up from junior Dannah Brehm. Five minutes later, Young scored an unassisted goal, her first of three, to extend the lead to 2-0. Then in the 9th minute, Ruth struck again for her second of the day, assisted this time by senior Mary Catherine Kinneman, building a commanding 3-0 lead that the Mountain Hawks could not overcome.

The score remained 3-0 into the second half until Young struck again, this time on a penalty shot in the 40th minute, extending the lead to 4-0. She would add one more to complete the hat trick just three minutes later, connected on her second unassisted goal from the center of the circle to reach the final score of 5-0.

The five goal shut out victory for the Owls is largest shut out victory since the Owls defeated Ursinus 5-0 in 1999. Young's hat trick is the first for the Cherry and White since Brehm recorded three goals against Saint Joseph's in last seasons' regular season finale.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Hanshue added six saves and the Cherry and White defense completely stifled the Mountain Hawks for much for the afternoon.

It is a quick turnaround for the Cherry and White, as the Owls (1-0) host Bryant tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. from Geasey Field.
