Field Hockey's Rally Falls Short Against Delaware

PHILADELPHIA (9/19/08) - Senior Liz Watto's goal with under two minutes to play sparked a late Temple rally, but the visiting Delaware Blue Hens were able to hang on for a 2-1 victory on Friday afternoon from Geasey Field.
Watto's goal came off the rebound of a Mary Catherine Kinneman shot on goal with under two minutes to play and seemed to ignite an Owl offense that had been stagnant all afternoon. But it was too little, too late for the Cherry and White (3-5), as the Blue Hens (1-5) would control the ball and run the clock in the final two minutes to hang on for their first victory of the season. For the game, Watto recorded three of the Owls' six shots on goal in the final 15 minutes.
Delaware's Florence Sijbrandij got the Blue Hens on the board in the 8th minute when she rocketed a shot from straight ahead into the back of the net following a penalty corner, giving the Blue Hens an early 1-0 lead. Delaware would score once more in the 32nd minute when Alexis Esbitt tapped home a goal off a rebound to give the Blue Hens a commanding 2-0 heading to the half.
In goal for the Cherry and White, senior Erin Hanshue recorded six saves.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday when they host cross-town rival Drexel. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
