PHILADELPHIA – Juniors Dannah Brehm, Kasey Ruth and Kristen Wanner all scored first half goals to help propel the Temple Field Hockey team to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rider from Geasey Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cherry and White snap a six-game losing skid.

Before a large crowd of fans and former players on hand for Temple Field Hockey Homecoming Reunion, the Owls’ (4-6) offense finally got back on track with an explosive three goal first half, marking the first time the Owls have scored three goals in a game since a 3-2 victory over Boston University on September 6th.

Brehm got the offense into gear in the 12th minute, scoring her fourth goal of the season off following a breakaway 2-on-1 assist from senior Liz Watto, giving the Owls the 1-0 advantage.

It was then Ruth who found the back of the net for the Cherry and White in the 23rd minute, driving through the circle for an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. The goal was Kasey Ruth’s second goal in as many games

The third and final goal of the half came just four minutes following Ruth’s goal, as Wanner blasted home from the top of the circle off a corner assist from junior Charise Young to give the Owls a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Any thoughts that Rider would just pack it in for the second half where quickly erased when the Broncs’ Tricia Crotty scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute to cut the Owls’ lead to 3-1.

Behind a spirited second half effort that saw the Broncs put five shots on goal, Erin McGinnis would score with :19 seconds remaining to cut the Cherry and White lead to 3-2, but it was too little, too late. The Owls held on to the ball for the remaining seconds to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

Senior Erin Hanshue recorded four saves in goal for the Cherry and White, helped in part by a defensive effort that contained the Broncs offense until late in the second half.

The Owls will hit the road this weekend for a difficult road swing that includes games at Big Ten powers Michigan and Michigan State. The Cherry and White will take on the Wolverines on Friday October 3rd, with play scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
