PHILADELPHIA-Junior Yun Yi Zhang had a match-high 16 kills, but it was not enough as the Temple volleyball team (1-1) fell, 3-0, to the visiting Army Black Knights (4-0) in game one of the Temple Invitational. The Black Knights are coached by former TU standout Alma Kovaci ('02), who made her first trip back to North Broad since graduating as the Owls' all-time digs leader.
Caitlin Loudon had a match-high 17 digs, while Jackie Morrison dished 27 assists.
Temple got down early in game one but battled back from a four-point deficit to tie the game at 10. The Owls continued to roll, taking a 15-11 lead. After taking a time out, Army scored two straight points to mount a comeback. The teams traded two point runs for the next few minutes before tying the set at 20. The score would remain tied for the next few minutes before Army was able to break out of the 23 pt. deadlock and take the set, 25-23.
Game two was close in the opening stages, with the teams going point for point. The Black Knights started to pull away but the Owls would never let them get more than three points ahead. Temple could not seem to get over the hump, however, as fell in its second straight set, 25-21.
Army continued to dominate in game three, slowly building a 16-9 lead. The teams traded points over the next few minutes but Army was still able to maintain a considerable lead, 22-13. With the Black Knights just two points away from victory (23-13), Temple decided to take a time out to figure out a game plan. It was too little, too late, however, as Army won its fourth straight match and the game, 25-14.
The Owls return to action tomorrow against Bowling Green at 12 p.m. and Fairfield at 5 p.m.
