NEWARK, Del. – Junior Dannah Brehm netted the game-winning goal in the fourth minute of overtime to lead the Temple Field Hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over #14 Boston University while competing in the Blue Hen Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Cherry and White’s record to 3-0 for the first time since the 2003 season.
Playing in steady wind and rain all game long, the Owls built a 2-0 lead thanks to efforts of junior Mandi Ruth. In the eighth minute, Ruth scored off a tip in front of the net to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. Then just one minute later, Ruth struck again, this time from tens yards out off an assist from Brehm to give the Cherry and White a 2-0 lead after just 10 minutes.
But just as fast as the Owls built the lead, the Terriers (1-1) began to chip away. BU’s Allie Dolce scored from 10 yards out in the 13th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Then, just 51 seconds into the start of the second half, BU’s Maryette Struat scored on a penalty stroke to tie the game at 2-2.
The score would remain knotted at 2-2 for the remaining 34 minutes of the second half to force overtime, thanks in part to the stellar play of Temple goal keeper Erin Hanshue, who recorded 10 saves in the tough weather conditions.
Senior Mary Catherine Kinneman added two assists for the Cherry and White, including the game-winner to Brehm in overtime.
The Owls return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. for their second game of the Blue Hen Classic when they face Ohio State. Action is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m.
