PHILADELPHIA - Two icons, John Chaney and Dr. Ray Moyer, will be inducted into the Temple University Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 24 during a formal ceremony (4:30 p.m.) held on campus at the Great Court in Mitten Hall. The two Cherry and White legends will be introduced at halftime of the Owls' game against Charlotte (6:00 p.m.).
"This will be a significant celebration in the history of Temple Athletics, and it is only fitting that it will come during the University's 125th Anniversary year," said TU Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "These two men have reached the pinnacle of their professions so it is ideal that they enter the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame together."
One of two Naismith Hall of Fame Temple men's basketball coaches, Chaney led the Owls to 516 wins, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the Elite Eight in his 24 years at the helm (1982-83 thru 2005-06). The school's all-time winningest basketball coach, who retired in 2006 with 741 career wins over 34 seasons, earned consensus National Coach of the Year honors in 1988, the year he led Temple to its first and only #1 national ranking. He also earned USBWA National Coach of the Year honors in 1987. In all, he led Temple to 23 postseason appearances in 24 seasons.
Moyer, the Howard Steel Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, has served as the team physician for Temple University student-athletes since 1978. He also served as the team physician for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1988-90. A 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School who did his orthopedic residency at Temple, Moyer was a stellar athlete in his own right. He earned All-America honors in baseball as an undergraduate at Lafayette College ('63) and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He has been assisted at Temple games by his wife, Page.
Space is limited for the Induction Ceremony at Mitten Hall, which begins at 3:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception including heavy hors d'oeuvres.
