Varsity 8's 12th place finish at Princeton Chase highlights weekend

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's crew team continued the fall portion of their schedule this past weekend competing at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta and the Princeton Chase. Facing off against some of the top teams along the East Coast, the Owls had strong showings in a number of different events.

In Saturday's Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, the Frosh 4+, comprised of Rob Nave (coxswain), Mike Marinella (Stroke), Kevin Nally (3-seat), Majiec Grudzien (2-seat), and Rich Ehmer (1-seat), took the gold medal by over 40 seconds. The Owls soundly defeated Army, Loyola, U Conn, Virginia Tech, Penn, and St. Joe's among others.

In the Open 4+ the Owls faced much stronger competition. The “A”boat, comprised of Sam Gannace (coxswain), Djordje Vilimanovic (stroke), John Boehm (3-seat), Ryan Martin (2-seat), and Brad Long (1-seat), placed 13th. The “B” team comprised of Sam Scimeca (coxswain), Mike Mirabella (stroke), Brandon Joyce (3-seat), Majiec Grudzien (2-seat), and Nick Cotino (1-seat), finished 19th.

During Sunday's competition at the Princeton Chase, the Temple Varsity 8 established themselves as one of the top teams in the East. The Owls finished 12th out of 43 crews with an impressive time of 13:53.4. Compared to virtually the same competition from a year ago, the Cherry and White moved up ten spots from its 22nd place finish in 2008. Don Norris (coxswain), Jimmy Barr (stroke), Scott Waters (7-seat), Jason Cartwright (6-seat), Nenad Ninkovic (5-seat), Pat Curran (4-seat), Brendan Cunningham (3-seat), Tom Masterson (2-seat), and John Masterson (1-seat), comprised the crew that was able to defeat Penn, Georgetown, Rutgers, Trinity, Dartmouth, MIT, Holy Cross, and Florida Tech among others.

The Owls' “B” team, comprised of Sam Scimeca (coxswain), Djordje Vilimanovic (stroke), Joe Bellesheim (7-seat), Jeff Wunderlich (6-seat), Mike VanAssche (5-seat), Brian Rehill (4-seat), Peter Ivacic (3-seat), Scott Herring (2-seat), and Chris McCain (1-seat) finished a solid 32nd. According to head coach Gavin White, “The “B” eight showed great heart and strong determination as they were forced to overcome a last minute line-up change due to injury.”

The fall portion of the team's schedule will continue at the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday, November 14.
