Owls rally from two sets down to take exciting third set

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – After rallying to win a long third set, the Temple volleyball team (10-10, 6-5) narrowly lost in the fourth to suffer a 3-1 defeat at the hands of A-10 powerhouse Dayton (21-3, 10-1). The Owls' Yun Yi Zhang led all players with 26 kills in the match.

Dayton's Lindsay Fletemier totaled 23 kills, leading four players who recorded double figure kills for the Flyers. Fletemier 16 kills through the first two sets, with zero errors, helped the Flyers jump out to a 2-0 lead in the match by scores of 25-13 and 25-20. Temple took the third set 31-29, but lost in the fourth by a score of 25-23.

Fletemier knocked down eight kills to power Dayton to a 25-13 win in the first set, as the Flyers out-hit Temple .382 to .054. There were eight early ties and three lead changes, but after the final tie at 10-10, the Flyers went on a run to pull out of reach.

With eight more kills in the second set, Fletemier proved dangerous again as her team hit .444 with 19 kills and only three errors.

Temple's Danielle Carrozza served up two aces to help bring the Owls back into the set, but 22-20 was as close as they could get before Dayton closed out on a 3-0 run.

The third set saw 17 ties and four lead changes, but not a single set point for Dayton. The Flyers battled back on seven set points for Temple before the Owls finally got a kill from Zhang followed by a kill from Cayleigh Ashman to put the set away.

The teams were neck-and-neck once again in the fourth set as the score was tied 14 times. With the Flyers up 24-22, Zhang knocked down a kill to ruin Dayton's first match point, but Becky Novacek put the next one away to give the Flyers the set and the match.

“Coming back the way we did showed a lot of character,” said Temple head coach Bob Bertucci. “It shows we have the ability to compete with a team like Dayton, but we have to sustain that level of play. We played much better than we did on Friday night, and that was definitely encouraging.”

Four players on both teams recorded double figures in digs. Temple was led by freshman Danielle Carrozza with a season-high 19 digs. Jackie Morrison recorded a double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs. Ashman finished the match with 15 kills and three blocks.

Temple will return to action on Friday, Nov. 6 in a 12:00 p.m. home match against La Salle.
