Two other Temple boats place third to cap successful weekend
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's crew finished off a very successful weekend with a gold medal performance in the Varsity 8 at the Braxton Memorial Regatta on the Schuylkill River Sunday. The Owls trailed Drexel for the entire race but were able to come back in the final 200 meters to win by a scant .17 seconds.
Stroked by Jimmy Barr, the crew raised its cadence from a base of 35 to 39 in order to overtake Drexel at the wire. The race was so close that neither team sitting at the finish knew who had won. Rowing in the winning eight were cox Don Norris, Barr, Scott Waters, Pat Curran, Nenad Ninkovic, Jeff Wunderlich, Brendan Cunningham, Tom Masterson, and John Masterson.
The Owls Varsity "B"boat, rowing in another section, trailed right from the start and finished third behind Ithaca and Drexel. Rowing in the "B" boat was cox Sam Scimeca, stroke Steve Brady, Joe Bellesheim, Brian Rehill, Petar Ivacic, Djordje Vilimanovic, Mike VanAssche, John Boehm, and Chris McCann.
Temple's JV8, also trailed from the outset, finished third behind Marietta and Drexel. Rowing in the JV 8 was cox Sam Gennace, stroke Mike Mirabella, Alex Klein, Djordje Vilimanovic, Brad Long, Ryan Martin, Kevin Nally, Majiec Grudgen, and Trey Ehmer.
The Temple Four never recovered from a slow start and finished third behind both Delaware and Penn State. Rowing in the Four was cox Rob Nave, stroke John Boehm, Joe Bellesheim, Brian Rehill, and Nick Contino.
