Men's Basketball Hosts Siena In Home Opener Saturday Night
11.19.09 | Men's Basketball
Game against #26/27 Saints caps football/basketball doubleheader
Game Notes
PHILADELPHIA - It is Super Saturday for Temple Athletics and the TU men's basketball team will cap off a rare football/basketball doubleheader when the Owls host the talented Siena Saints at the Liacouras Center (7:00 p.m.) in their home opener. The game will be videostreamed on a pay-per-view basis on www.owlsports.com with a free audiostream also available on the site.
Temple (1-1), which lost a heart-breaker, 46-45, at #19/20 Georgetown Tuesday, is led by junior forward Lavoy Allen. The preseason first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference selection is averaging 10.5 points and a league-best 14.5 rebounds per game. Senior guard Ryan Brooks leads the owls with a 14.5 scoring average while sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (9.5 ppg.) is tallying just below double-figures.
Senior co-captain Luis Guzman (4.0 ppg.), who leads the Owls in assists with a 4.5 average, and sophomore forward Michael Eric (6.0 ppg., 4.5 rpg.) round out fourth-year coach Fran Dunphy's starting five.
Siena, which has posted first round wins in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments, is under the direction of sixth-year head coach Fran McCaffery. A local product who played his college ball at Penn ('82), McCaffery has a veteran club back, which is the reason the Saints are ranked as high as #26/27 in the national polls.
Two-time first team all-MAAC selection Edwin Ubiles, a 6-6 swingman, leads a balanced Saint attack with a 16.5 scoring average. Two players, senior forward Alex Franklin (14.0 ppg./10.0 rpg.) and junior forward Ryan Rossiter (10.5 ppg./10.5 rpg.), average double-doubles while junior guard Clarence Jackson also scores in double figures (14.5 ppg.). senior guard Ronald Moore (5.5 ppg.) tops the team in assists (13).
This is just the third meeting between Siena and Temple with the Saints winning in consecutive seasons in the early '50s in Albany to account for the previous two encounters.
