Owls look to remain undefeated against highly-regarded Hawks

Game Notes vs. Hartford

PHILADELPHIA - Off to their best start since 2005, the Owls are undefeated at 5-0 and will face a tough test at Hartford in a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Hawks stand at 3-1 which includes a 2-0 record at home; one of those wins coming against 19th-ranked Louisville.

The game will be televised locally in Connecticut on CTSN. Fans can listen to the radio broadcast on WWUH, watch a live webcast here and view live stats here.

Junior Shaqwedia Wallace is leading the Owls so far with 17.0 points per game, while senior Jasmine Stone leads the team in rebounds at 8.0 per game. Senior LaKeisha Eaddy (7.4 ppg, 4.8 apg) returns as a preseason A-10 Second Team selection, while sophomore Kristen McCarthy, a preseason third team pick, is the second-leading scorer to Wallace with 12.2 points per game. Also in the starting lineup is junior Marli Bennett (6.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and freshman Natasha Thames (4.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg).

Two players are averging in double figures for the Hawks, led by senior Diana Delva at 12.8 ppg. Senior Erica Beverly is averaging a double-double with 11.5 ppg and a team-best 10.0 rpg. Hartford was a 20-12 team last season, and lost in the NCAA Tournament first round to eventual champ Connecticut.

HOT START
Temple is 5-0 to start the season for the first time in four years, since the 2005-06 team started 6-0 before losing their seventh game at Florida.

COACHING CONNECTION
Second-year head coach Tonya Cardoza will be coaching against a player she used to coach when the Owls play at Hartford. Cardoza arrived as an assistant coach at Connecticut in 1994-95, which was Hartford coach Jennifer Rizzotti's junior year. It also happened to be a year that UConn went undefeated en route to a national championship.

HONORS PILING UP FOR QWEDIA
The first Big 5 Player of the Week honor for the season, as well as the second, went to Shaqwedia Wallace for her outstanding play in the Owls' first four games of the season. Kristen McCarthy was one of three Big 5 players named to the weekly Big 5 Honor Roll, also for both weeks.

Highlights of Wallace's efforts include scoring a career-high 27 points in TU's overtime win vs. Illinois, 19 points in a win vs. Auburn and 22 points in a win at Buffalo.

McCarthy tied a career-high 19 points in the Illinois win, and has gone on to score in double figures in all of Temple's games so far.

NATIONAL POLL RECOGNITION
Although Temple is picked fifth in the A-10 Preseason poll, the Owls are third among conference teams in the current AP Poll with 6 votes. Xavier is ranked ninth, while Dayton is receiving 39 votes. In the ESPN/USA Today Poll, Xavier is 10th with Dayton receiving 37 votes and Temple receiving 22 votes.

Today's opponent Hartord is also receiving 6 votes in AP and 10 in ESPN/USA Today.

NEXT STOP, #1
Prior to Temple's game vs. Eastern Michigan, LaKeisha Eaddy needed just two assists to rank second all-time in career assists at Temple. She got them, and currently stands in second with 399 assists. Eaddy is on pace to take over the top spot by the end of her career, currently held by Donna Kennedy (1979-83) with 507. Eaddy began with a bang in TU's season opener, dishing out a game-high 10 assists in the overtime win.

HIDE YOUR VALUABLES
The Owls have a knack for coming up with the ball and forcing turnovers, as evidenced by their 13.4 steals per game which is tops in the A-10. Temple's 20 team steals at Dartmouth were the most in a single game for any A-10 team so far this season.

Temple has two players ranked in the top three in steals, with Kristen McCarthy averaging a league-best 2.8 spg and Shaqwedia Wallace tied for third at 2.6 spg.

EVERYONE UP TO THE TASK
While Shaqwedia Wallace has led Temple in scoring in four of its five games, the offense has not relied on her exclusively. Kristen McCarthy has scored in double figures in all five contests, and in TU's win vs. Eastern Michigan, four players scored in double figures. At Dartmouth, all nine of TU's active players scored, with seven scoring six points or more.

MAKING MORE THAN HALF
Junior Marli Bennett, a starting forward for the Owls, is making more than half of the shots she takes at 56 percent so far this season. Bennett is 14-for-25 from the field, including a 4-of-5 performance vs. Auburn and a 4-of-6 outing vs. Eastern Michigan.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH
Senior Jasmine Stone has been playing the role of the Owls' “spark off the bench,” and playing it well. Stone is third on the team with 7.8 ppg, and first in rebounds at 8.0 per game, which is currently tied for sixth among all players in the A-10.

RPI IN THE TOP 10
Temple is currently 9th in the nation in RPI according to CollegeRPI.com.

NEXT UP...
Temple's next game will take the Owls to Big East powerhouse Rutgers for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Wed., Dec. 2. The Scarlet Knights were ranked 25th to start the season, but are now only receiving votes in both polls after going 2-2 in their first four contests.
