PHILADELPHIA - Junior forward Lavoy Allen had a dominant game, both offensively and defensively to lead Temple to a 61-50 win over Virginia Tech in the final game of a Philly Hoop Group Classic tripleheader at The Palestra Friday evening. The Owls improved to 4-1 for the first time since the 2000-01 season while the Hokies fell to 3-1.
Allen made eight of nine shots, including three highlight reel dunks, en route to a team-high 18 points. He also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and dished four assists.
The 6-8 forward was the lone Owl in double figures as it was again the defense that led head coach Fran Dunphy's squad. For the third time in five games the Cherry and White held an opponent to 50 or fewer points. Temple also frustrated Hokie shooters to 29.8 percent shooting (17-57) and a mere 20 percent (3-15) from three-point range.
Tech guard Malcolm Delaney was the lone player to get on track offensively, tallying 32 points on nine-of-21 shooting. The rest of the Tech players combined for six-of-36 from the field (16.7%) and 0-9 from long-range.
“I like to think we're a pretty good defensive basketball team,” Dunphy said. “Obviously, we didn't do much against Delaney in the second half. He was terrific, but some of it was we didn't step out and hedge on him when he was going to step up and shoot, but for the most part, we're getting there as a defensive team. I give Lavoy a lot of that credit. He's a nice anchor for us to have.”
Trailing 13-8 midway through the first half, TU turned up the intensity on defense while getting on track offensively. The Owls went on a 13-2 run. Fernandez keyed the run, opening it with a three then finding Allen on two nice passes, the second one threading the needle in the lane on a bounce pass that led to a slam, making it 19-15. Senior Luis Guzman (8 points, career-high 7 rebounds) capped the run with a layup at the four-minute to make it 21-15.
Following a Jeff Allen basket, Temple closed the half by scoring the final six points to take a 27-17 advantage into the lockerroom.
Virginia Tech closed the margin to 30-28 on two free throws by Delaney to start the second half, before the Owls went on a 22-6 run to take a 52-34 lead with six minutes remaining. Allen, who had 10 of his points in the decisive stretch, finished the run with a tomahawk slam,
A three-pointer by Fernandez, who distributed a career-high six assists and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, a minute later gave Temple it largest lead, 55-36. The Owls were never threatened the remainder of the contest.
The Owls played the game without sophomore forward Micheal Eric, who suffered a right knee sprain in the Ball State win. He is doubtful for the team's game against St. John's Saturday night (8:30 p.m./1210 AM WPHT) at The Palestra in the final of the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
Redshirt freshman TJ DiLeo scored five points in a career-high-tying 14 minutes.
