Juan Fernandez Named A-10 Player of the Week

Sophomore guard led Owls to 2-0 week
PHILADELPHIA – Temple sophomore guard Juan Fernandez has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for the week ending December 19. Fernandez, who earns his first A-10 Player of the Week honor of his career, averaged 27 points in leading the Owls to a 2-0 week with wins over two previously undefeated Big East teams.
The 6-4 Argentinean native scored a career-high 33 points in 75-65 win over then #3/3 Villanova on Dec. 13. It marked the first time Temple had defeated a Top 5 team since Feb. 20, 2000 (77-69 at top-ranked Cincinnati). He made a career-best seven three-pointers (on nine attempts) in the contest. He followed that with a 21-point effort in a road win against Seton Hall on Dec. 19. In that game, he made seven of 12 field goal attempts and all six free throws in the 71-65 come-from-behind victory.
For the week Fernandez shot 18-of-27 (66.7%) from field, eight-of-11 (72.7%) from three and 10-10 from line. On the season, he ranks second on the team with a 13.5 scoring average. He also leads the team in assists with a 3.8 average (6th in A-10), three-pointers made (2.3 per game, 6th in A-10) and three-point percentage (.439, 5th in A-10).
The Owls (9-2) are off this week and next take the court on Monday, December 28 (7:00 p.m.) against Bowling Green at McGonigle Hall. It is “Turn Back The Clock” Night as Temple will be playing its first regular season game in its old home since opening the Liacouras Center in 1997. The team will wear retro uniforms from the 1980s and their will be special 80s theme promotions at the game.
