AKRON, Ohio – Temple women's basketball got back in the win column, improving to 10-2 with a 55-43 road victory at Akron (6-6) on Monday night.
Marli Bennett tied her season high and led the Owls with 11 points, also tying for team-high honors with eight rebounds. Qwedia Wallace scored nine points for Temple, while freshman Victoria Macaulay came off the bench to add a season-high eight points.
Jasmine Stone scored three early buckets and the Owls shot the ball well en route to a 16-8 lead just before the midway point of the first half.
Akron never came within fewer than six down the stretch, failing to take advantage of a Temple dry spell that saw the Owls not score a field goal for over eight minutes to end the half. Qwedia Wallace and Natasha Thames combined to go 6-of-6 at the free throw line over that period, helping the Owls take a 26-20 lead into halftime.
Akron's Rachel Tecca led all players with 11 points at the half, while Bennett was the leader for Temple with seven points.
Kristen McCarthy scored five points and Bennett scored four during a 14-1 Temple run to open the second half, giving the Owls a 19-point, 40-21 lead at 13:43.
The Zips suffered nearly an eight-minute dry spell to open the half, but led by Tecca, Akron eventually narrowed the margin to as few as seven points with under four minutes remaining. Temple unfortunately saw a repeat performance of the first half and did not convert a field-goal attempt for the final seven minutes of the contest.
One bright spot midway through the second half was the play of Macaulay, who scored all three buckets in a 6-0 Temple run and finished the game going 4-of-4 from the field.
Tecca finished with a game-high 22 points for Akron as well as a game-high nine rebounds.
Next up for the Owls is very likely the toughest three-game stretch of any team in the country. Temple will play three top-15 teams, starting with a home contest vs. #8 Duke. That game is set for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 in McGonigle Hall.
