Women’s Basketball Loses to #8/9 Duke on the Glass

Owls led by Kristen McCarthy with 16 points in close loss to Blue Devils

PHILADELPHIA – In a close game, it was Duke's dominance on the glass that gave the #8/9 Blue Devils a 70-62 win against the Temple women's basketball team. The Owls (10-3) had a lead as late as the eight-minute mark of the second half, but Duke (11-2) outscored Temple 22-13 down the stretch.
Duke finished with a 20-9 advantage in second-chance points, out-rebounding Temple 40-27. The Blue Devils were led by Karima Christmas with a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Kristen McCarthy scored a team-high 16 points for Temple and went 3-of-7 from behind the arc. McCarthy also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Jasmine Stone finished in double figures with 10 points, and Victoria Macaulay came off the bench for a season-high 10 points along with three steals.
Duke held the lead for most of the first half, but Temple tied the score twice and also took the lead briefly with 5:36 remaining. Neither team led by more than four until just before the break, as the Blue Devils closed on a 7-2 run to lead by six, 33-27 at halftime.
Temple got more momentum going in the second half, quickly tying the score at 35-35. Kristie Watkins-Day followed a layup with two free throws on the next possession to give Temple its largest lead of the game, 45-41 with 11:48 remaining.
The lead changed hands two more times before Duke took over for good. The Blue Devils went 20-of-24 at the line in the second half including a perfect 8-of-8 in the final minute to seal the victory.
Duke held as much as a 10-point lead on two occasions, the first with 3:19 remaining before Temple got treys from McCarthy and BJ Williams to narrow the margin to four, but it was as close as the Owls would get.
Temple will face two more top-15 teams over the next 10 days, both on the road. The Owls return to action on Sunday, Jan. 3 in a 2:00 p.m. contest at #12/11 Florida State.
