TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Temple women's basketball team erased a 13-point first-half deficit to eventually lead by two in the second half, but #12/11 Florida State (13-2) came up big down the stretch for a 77-64 victory. The Owls (10-4) were led by Kristen McCarthy with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The loss was Temple's second in a row, but also its second game against a top-12 opponent. The Owls earned second-half leads in both contests, but in today's game, Florida State outscored Temple 33-18 down the stretch.
Temple's Jasmine Stone led all players with 12 rebounds, and the Owls finished with a 43-38 edge in rebounds including a 21-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
LaKeisha Eaddy scored 13 points and Qwedia Wallace added 10 for Temple. McCarthy's 19 points and 11 rebounds tied her career-highs in both.
Four players scored in double figures for Florida State, led by Alysha Harvin who came off the bench for 17 points and nine rebounds.
McCarthy and Stone helped keep Temple in the game in the first half, with McCarthy scoring 11 points and Stone grabbing 10 boards.
The Owls led 4-0 early and held the Seminoles without a point for nearly four minutes. Courtney Ward hit a three-pointer for the Seminoles at 16:11 to start an 8-0 run, and Florida State never again trailed in the half. Going 5-of-7 from three-point range helped the Seminoles lead by as many as 13 points with under two minutes remaining, 35-22.
Temple went into the break down only eight at 35-27, after closing the half on a 5-0 run with a trey from McCarthy and a layup from Stone. The Owls got some help from the Seminoles who went 0-for-5 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the half.
The Owls came out strong in the second half, opening with a 7-2 run to cut the margin to three. After Florida State pulled back up by seven, Temple went on a 16-3 run over the next four minutes take a 46-44 lead at 10:37.
“We kicked up our defensive intensity and crashed the offensive boards,” Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza said of the team's second-half run. “But then we missed some assignments and left people open to shoot the three. That and turnovers at crucial moments down the stretch were really what cost us.”
The Owls made only one bucket from the field in the seven minutes after taking the lead, while Florida State drained three from behind the arc. Temple cut a 13-point deficit back to eight in the final two minutes, but could come no closer. The Seminoles did not repeat their mistakes at the charity stripe, going 6-of-6 to close out the game.
Temple has a week off before its next game, which is also its Atlantic 10 opener. The Owls will travel to #15/13 Xavier for a nationally-televised contest on ESPN2 at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10.
