1.2.10 | Women's Basketball
Seminoles are the second of three straight ranked opponents on tap for Owls
Game Notes vs. Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Temple women's basketball team is on the road in Tallahassee, getting set to face #12/11 Florida State (12-2) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3. Temple (10-3) is coming off only its third loss of the season, a defeat at the hands of #8/9 Duke by a score of 70-62 on New Year's Eve.
TAKING A LOOK AT TEMPLE...
Earlier this week, Temple rebounded with a 55-43 win at Akron after suffering its second loss of the season against Villanova on Dec. 20. That loss snapped a four-game win streak.
Junior Qwedia Wallace is leading the Owls so far with 13.0 points per game, which ranks ninth in the A-10. Senior Jasmine Stone leads the team in rebounds at 8.4 per game, good enough for fourth place in the A-10. Stone was named the Big 5 Player of the Week two weeks ago after averaging a double-double in Temple's three wins the previous week. Sophomore Kristen McCarthy, a preseason A-10 third team pick, is the second-leading scorer to Wallace with 11.2 ppg.
Joining Wallace, McCarthy and Stone in the starting lineup have been senior LaKeisha Eaddy (8.1 ppg, 3.9 apg) and junior Marli Bennett (4.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg). Sophomore BJ Williams is Temple's leading player off the bench, averaging 6.4 points per game, followed by freshman Natasha Thames (4.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg) who spent the first six games of the season in the starting lineup.
SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE
#12/11 Florida State has lost only twice this season, to DePaul and to #1/1 Connecticut. The Seminoles opened the season with 10 straight wins before losing two of their last four contests. Two players average in double figures in scoring for Florida State, led by Jacinta Monroe at 13.6 ppg along with a team-high 6.9 rpg.
SERIES HISTORY
Florida State holds a 2-1 advantage over Temple in the all-time series. The most recent meeting was last season in Philly, and it was the Seminoles who came away with an 86-67 win. Temple's only victory against Florida State was back in 1995.
HOT START
Before losing to Duke, Temple was off to its best start in 28 years. But the Owls still have the best record since the 2005-06 team started at 10-3 before losing its fourth game.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS
Temple hung tough with #8/9 Duke on Dec. 31, but ultimately lost on the glass. Duke earned a 40-27 edge in rebounds, leading to a 20-9 advantage in second chance points.
NOW ACCEPTING CHARITY
Temple did not shoot above 70 percent from the free throw line in five of its first eight games, but the Owls have improved drastically since then. Temple has averaged 79 percent shooting from the charity stripe in its last five games, going 70-of-89 from the line.
TEMPLE VS. THE POLLS
While Temple is only 12-87 all-time against ranked opponents, seven of those wins have come in the last five years. The Owls are 7-17 since the 2004-05 season. Their most recent win vs. a ranked opponent was Feb. 25, 2009 against #13 Xavier.
HEIGHTENED SECURITY
Temple has held 10 of its 13 opponents this season to 55 points or fewer, and currently ranks 16th in NCAA Division I in scoring defense at 53.8 ppg.
A WHOLE NEW WORLD
Temple has found a major threat on the glass in senior Jasmine Stone, who was unavailable for the Owls in the non-conference portion of the last two seasons with eligibility issues. Stone ranks first on the team, fourth in the A-10 and 52nd in the nation with 8.4 rebounds per game.
HIDE YOUR VALUABLES
The Owls have a knack for coming up with the ball and forcing turnovers, as evidenced by their 11.5 steals per game which is tops in the A-10 and 25th in NCAA Division I. Temple's 20 team steals at Dartmouth were the most in a single game for any A-10 team so far this season.
RPI HOVERING AROUND 30
Temple is currently 28th in the nation in RPI according to CollegeRPI.com, and 31st according to realtimerpi.com.
NEXT UP...
Temple's current stretch is likely the toughest of any team in the nation. After playing #12/11 Florida State, which follows the Owls' game vs. #8/9 Duke, Temple will open its A-10 season on the road at #15/13 Xavier.
