PHILADELPHIA - The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) has awarded the Temple University Athletic Marketing Department a first-place award at its 2009 NACMA Convention, held last weekend in Orlando, Fla.
Temple won the award for its season ticket sales campaign of "Temple Men's Basketball - Five Months of Christmas." The campaign featured All-America candidate Dionte Christmas in all print (newspaper, poster) and outdoor (billboard) materials. Christmas was also featured with his own bobble head doll. Students and fans were given Santa Claus hats and "Merry Christmas" signs during a nationally televised home game versus Tennessee in December. In addition, one lucky fan at every home men's basketball game was awarded a "Five Months of Christmas" prize, ranging from restaurant gift certificates to future season tickets, while Feliz Navidad played over the public address system.
"We're very honored to receive such a great award," said Scott Walcoff, the assistant athletic director of marketing and promotions. "The recent Temple basketball season truly was like celebrating Christmas for five months. It was an exciting season for our fans, culminating in another Atlantic 10 Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Special thanks to both Dionte and head coach Fran Dunphy for allowing us to promote the season and Dionte's extraordinary talents in such a manner."
This is the second NACMA award for Walcoff and his staff. In 2007, they received a first-place award in the category of "Best Single Game Attendance Promotion" for their development of Hooter the Owl's Birthday Party at a Temple men's basketball game.
Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Awards are presented in 13 categories, with each category divided into three groups based upon school size and conference affiliations to promote fairness. A total of 700 entries were received for the 2008-09 year.
NACMA is administered by NACDA. In its 44th year, NACDA is the professional and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
