Virginia Beach, Va. –Temple’s field hockey program was well represented at the United States Field Hockey Association’s (USFHA) 2009 National Championship, with assistant coaches Beth Riley and Jamie Whitten helping team New Jersey to the title. The squad posted a 4-1 victory over the South Team in the finals of the tournament, held in Virginia Beach, Va. June 20-27.
Head Coach Amanda Janney served as an assistant coach as well as the team administrator.
The Women’s National Championship is a round-robin tournament featuring the top athletes from USA Field Hockey’s six regional High Performance Centers. Beginning in early spring, High Performance Centers serving seven regions conduct open trials for college-age and older athletes. Once selected to a Center, athletes receive elite-level training from some of the nation’s top coaches over the course of the spring. At the conclusion of the program, each Center selects a team to represent its region at the National Championships. Athletes competing in the tournament have the opportunity for selection to the U.S. National Squad.
Current Temple players Charise Young and Sarah Dalrymple also made the New Jersey High Performance Squad but were not selected to be a part of the travel squad.
Janney and Riley also teamed to coach the U19 Lancaster Team to a bronze medal at the 2009 National Futures Championship in Virginia Beach. Janney’s squad finished with a 5-1 record and featured incoming Owl freshman Katie Briglia on its roster.
