#15/15 Men's Basketball Travels To Charlotte For Wednesday Game

1.26.10 | Men's Basketball

Owls-49ers showdown to be televised live by The Comcast Network

Game Notes

CHARLOTTE, NC -
The #15/15 Temple men's basketball team has met and overcome many challenges on its way to the program's first national ranking since 2001. The Owls have handed #3/3 Villanova its only loss, won eight road games, and defeated three-time Atlantic 10 regular season champion Xavier. This Wednesday night (7:00 p.m./The Comcast Network/1210 AM WPHT) Temple will look to do what no other Owl team has accomplished, defeat Charlotte at Halton Arena.

Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, is riding a six-game winning streak and has won 13 of its last 14 games. The Owls (17-3, 5-0) remain the only unbeaten team in the A-10 with Xavier (13-6, 5-1) one-half game behind and Charlotte (14-5, 4-1) a game back in the standings. Temple has won seven straight road contests as it travels to the only venue in the league where it has yet to post a victory. Charlotte has won all three meetings in the arena.

Senior guard Ryan Brooks continues to lead the Owls with a 16.0 scoring average. One of the top perimeter defenders in the country, Brooks and junior forward Lavoy Allen (10.6 ppg., 9.8 rpg.), a 2009 A-10 All-Defensive team selection, are the mainstays on TU's defense that ranks among the nation's leaders in scoring (6th/56.3 ppg.), three-point percentage defense (5th/.271) and field goal percentage defense (13th/.378).

Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez, who is among the top five three-point shooters in the league (46-101, .455), leads the team in assists (71) while ranking second in scoring (13.5 ppg.). Senior guard Luis Guzman (4.9 ppg.) and sophomore forward Micheal Eric (4.8 ppg.) round out the starting five.

Charlotte, under the direction of head coach Bobby Lutz, has won three in a row and four its last five with the lone loss in that stretch coming at Xavier (86-74, 1/13). Three of the 49ers losses have come to ranked teams, including their only home loss (#20 Georgia Tech).

Boston College transfer Shamari Spears, a 6-6 junior forward, tops Charlotte in scoring with a 16.9 average. Two other newcomers, junior college transfer Derrio Green (12.1 ppg.) and freshman Chris Braswell (9.9 ppg./9.2 rpg.) rank second and third on the team in scoring while senior guard DiJuan Harris (8.9 ppg., 4.2 apg.) directs the offense. Junior forward An'Juan Wilderness (6.5 ppg.), who's buzzer beater Saturday lifted Charlotte past La Salle, rounds out the starting five.
