Kristen McCarthy's Blog - Women's Basketball's Florida State Trip
1.5.10 | Women's Basketball
Sophomore forward Kristen McCarthy is making her OwlSports.com writing debut with a blog about the team's trip this past weekend to Florida State. The team arrived in Tallahassee at noon on Saturday, Jan. 2, and departed in the late afternoon on Monday, Jan. 4. McCarthy was the team's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds against the 11th-ranked Seminoles.
Hello Owl Fans! Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I definitely enjoyed the holidays since I was able to go home for a few days and see my family. We just finished up our road game at Florida State that unfortunately was not victorious for us. Although we did not win the game, the trip itself was fun. Everyone's expectations upon arriving in Florida were that the weather would be warm and beautiful, but instead we brought the cold weather from Philly with us.
On day one in Florida we arrived to the DoubleTree Hotel in Tallahassee and had a few hours of down time which most of the team used to sleep. Everyone at the hotel was very welcoming and nice, and they showed us a little southern hospitality. Next, we drove down to Florida State's arena where we had a productive practice. After practice we went back to the hotel , showered, and put on our “cute” clothes for dinner at Famous Dave's BBQ. Famous Dave's was tasty and very filling. I ate chicken and ribs, and was stuffed for the rest of the night. Eating a big meal results in a good nights' sleep.
Day two in the South was game day!!! The entire team was very focused. We had film in the morning then immediately after, we headed to the FSU gym for shootaround. Shootaround was also productive, as we went over the Seminoles' personnel and what we would have to do to win. After shootaround it was back to the hotel to shower and then go eat our pregame meal. Pregame was good, I ate my entire omelette and it was huge, but I do not miss a meal. Following pregame we had more down time to rest, relax, and get focused for the game. After my short nap I got dressed and headed to the bus.
After arriving to the gym my teammates and I laced up our sneaks and it was go time! As we warmed up I was excited for the opportunity to play such a talented team in Florida State. Last year the game did not go so well for us so we definitely had revenge in mind. We all knew that everyone would have to step up, especially since we were short-handed with only eight players suited up. The game was very exciting with the Owls fighting hard until the end.
Unfortunately, we did not come out with the victory, but there were a lot of positive things taken from the game. We learned that we can improve on many things, such as paying attention to detail and sticking with the game plan. Tough games like these will only help us when we play conference games.
After the game we went back to shower and go eat in the hotel restaurant. After dinner we had all night to relax. My road roomie (Marli) and I watched some ESPN and then a movie. Marli chose Couples Retreat, which ended up being a great choice. Being the nice person that she is, Marli invited BJ to watch the movie with us. =) We laughed the entire movie, it was hilarious. After the movie ended it was off to sleep.
Day three we woke up for a 10 o'clock breakfast where again I had another huge omelette. The best part of the day was yet to come. BOWLING!!!!! Everyone had been talking trash, especially Coach Veney and Coach Cardoza. There were four different teams with one coach being on each team. My team consisted of the one and only Tonya Cardoza, the 3-point specialist Qwedia Wallace, the DOBO (Director of Operations) Jimmy G, and the surprise bowler Karen Auerbach! (Media Relations) Of course we won the first game by a landslide. The second game did not turn out as well, so we settled for second.
One thing I found out when bowling was that we have quite a few people that could make it to the WNBA (Women's National Bowling Association). My teammates Marli, Tasha, and Eaddy are great bowlers. Eaddy was the MVP of the day, after bowling a 180 in the second game. Coach Cardoza was not too bad herself she bowled a 124! Yeah, she is nice with the bowling! Coach Veney struggled but it was just not her day.
After bowling we headed back to the hotel where we packed our stuff and loaded the bus. Next stop would be the airport :/. Goodbye 40 degree weather, hello 10 degree weather. Until next time, I'm signing out.
