Fencing Competes At 39th Annual Garret Open

Lomuscio and Thompson place top 10 in respective weapons
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Alyssa Lomuscio placed 10th in foil and classmate Kamali Thompson ended with a like finish in sabre at the 39th Annual Garret Open, held at Penn State on Saturday, November 13. Lomuscio and Thompson were the Owls' highest finishers amongst a field of very competitive fencers.
The Owls had six semi-final and eight top 20 finishes on the day in a very strong tournament with fencers from the East Coast and Midwest.
Freshman Epiphany Georges placed right behind Lomuscio in foil, earning 11th place overall. Another freshman, Teagan Kilpatrick, found herself in the top 20 with a 14th place finish. Sophomore Mikayla Varadi placed 21st, freshman Liz Van Son placed 29th and junior Danielle Jones ended in 52nd to round out the weapon. The title was won by Alexandra Kiefer of Harvard.
In sabre, Thompson and senior captain Audrey Barroso were Temple's two semi-finalists, as Barroso placed 12th. Freshmen Tasia Ford and Jessica Adams placed top 30 with finishes of 27th and T-29th, respectively. Freshman Andrea Haley placed 31st, and senior Sam Pascarelli was the final of six TU sabre fencers, placing 46th. Caroline Volka of Harvard won the weapon.
The epee squad fared well with three fencers in the top 20. Junior Jill Bratton was the top TU finisher in the weapon, taking 16th. Senior Grace Wu placed 18th, followed by freshman Kimberly Howell in 20th. Freshman Chantal Montrose and junior Nicola Horscroft were the final two Owls, placing 33rd and 54th. The weapon was won by Katarzyna Dabrowa of the Ohio State University.
The Owls fence next in the North American Cup B on November 19-22 in Milwaukee, Wisc.
